Eyewitnesses said the trailer conveying cows failed brakes and crushed series of vehicles on its path at Kwata Flyover in Awka, the Anambra State capital, claiming at least nine lives.Nine persons were reported dead with many more injured and receiving medical attention at nearby medical facilities. The incident which left  many in pools of blood was further exacerbated when the angry mob attacked and set the trailer ablaze.

The eye witnesses,  said the lorry, with registration number ‘Plateau JJNN-59YZ’ conveying cattle lost control ramming into parked vehicles at the Kwata traffic light as lost its speed control and rammed into more than five cars waiting at the traffic light.

Unconfirmed reports also said that pedestrians, including those doing brisk businesses in the traffic were said to be among those that lost their lives, while some occupants of the vehicles involved also lost their lives.

The five cars involved in the mishap were damaged beyond repair, while bodies of the dead and injured have been taken away by men of the Anambra State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC.

There’s no confirmation on the number of casualties, but irate youths already set the lorry ablaze, despite security agents o calm tension at the scene.

A concern resident Chukwudi Obike Says ”I’m not surprised about the accident in that the construction of the three flyovers (Amawbia, Aroma& Kwata) is very poor.

This is due to the slopes on both sides of each flyover.

Also heavy duty vehicles are not allowed to ply on the flyovers to reduce their movement from the regular traffic’ within the Awka metropolis.

There’s need for urgent reconstruction of the flyovers by the Anambra State government to save further typing and expression of RIP, CONDOLENCES, SYMPATHIES etc from the populace.

Once the three flyovers not really safe for very traffic.
